JERSEY ANGLER WINS CT ASA TOURNAMENT

Harry Svenson of Union Beach, N.J. trailered his 31-foot Fountain, Cheap Shot, up to Old Saybrook, Ct. to win the Sept. 30-Oct. 1 ASA Tournament over strong local competition in the 31-boat field.

Svenson was joined by John Elkovcs of Keyport, N.J., Jeff Diamond from Holmdel, N.J., and Jay Smith of Patchogue, N.Y. as they netted bunkers the first morning and headed to The Race for a great bite that produced 28 stripers, including a 43.2-pounder by Diamond that put them into second place behind a 46.05-pounder on David Johnson’s Hang On. There was no time for celebration that night as one outboard was giving them trouble, but Ocean Performance of Old Saybrook came through in the clutch and sent a mechanic to fix the problem (that turned out to only be a relay) and got Cheap Shot back in the game.

Wind and rough seas greeted contestants the second morning, resulting in a delayed start. That actually worked in Svenson’s favor as they ran into a school of bunkers on the way out and Smith castnetted a supply. The Race was much too rough, so Svenson fished near Fisher’s Island where Diamond once again came through by boating a 34.55-pound striper that gave them a two-day total of 77.75 pounds to take the $10,000 first prize plus the striped bass Calcutta. Hang On was unable to add a second bass to their leader. Keith Salisbury on Lori Marie had a 36.65-pound bass Saturday, and added a 28.95-pounder for the second place 65.6 pound total. Michael Lindholms’s Metalica, which weighed a 33.3-pound bass the first day, added 27.85-pounder for the third place 61.15 pounds. Rick Nunn’s Fountain, Hapi Daze, took fourth place by catching a 20.75-pound bass to total 58.7 pounds with their Saturday 37.95-pounder. Jeff Chase’s Hi-Seas finished fourth with 58.4 pounds, just ahead of P.T. Shunke’s Insufficient Funds 31 with 58 pounds.

Jennifer Johnson won the Lady Angler award aboard Hang On, and Greg Nunn took the Junior Angler prize on his father’s Hapi Daze. The bluefish Calcutta went to Davis Schunke’s Insufficient Funds 38 with a 15.2-pound chopper.
